Rabbit Wellness Exam |
| |
Rabbits usually required nail trims once a month. This is a perfect time to exam your
companion rabbit for potential illnesses.
1. Holding your bunny on your lap, pet her body. Feel for any abnormalities. Look for loss of hair or injuries. If she’s shedding, she might appreciate a gentle brushing.
2. Examine the bunny’s eyes for any discharge or injury. Using a pen light, look into her ears. If her ears are dirty, clean with veterinarian-recommended cleanser and cotton swab.
3. Flip your bunny onto her back and cradle her in your arms. Check her vent for cleanliness or abnormalities. If necessary, clean buildup from the glands on either side of vent with mineral oil and a cotton swab.
Front foot
4. Lay the bunny on her back on your lap. Grasping each foot, trim her nails to a point above the vein. If your bunny has dark nails, locate the vein by shining the penlight on her nails. If you should happen to nick the vein, gently coat the nail with a little bit of cornstarch to help stop the bleeding.
Hind foot
5. Examine your bunny’s nose for any discharge. Gently pull back her lips to examine her teeth. Check for discoloration and broken teeth.
| |
Should you notice anything out of the ordinary on your bunny while conducting the well rabbit examination, please contact your veterinarian as soon as possible.
